The football coach, Derek Mason, and his wife LeighAnne, have been married for 31 years.

Their journey began when they met in Northern Arizona, where LeighAnne, initially resistant to dating football players despite being a cheerleader, found Derek to be persistent and different.

Reflecting on their early days, LeighAnne shared, “When we first started dating, I did not like football players. He was very persistent,” she says, laughing. “He was different. There was something a little bit deeper to him that might not have always come out.”

The couple is blessed with two daughters, Sydney and Makenzie, with Makenzie being the older of the two, holding a two-year age gap.

Makenzie, their daughter, immersed herself in lacrosse during high school and college.

She attended Harpeth Hall High School, earning the Most Valuable Offensive Player title in 2016 as a four-year varsity member.

Subsequently, Makenzie continued her lacrosse journey at the University of Florida.

On the other hand, details about Sydney, their other daughter, remain relatively unknown.

Middle Tennesse Hires Derek Mason

On Wednesday, Middle Tennessee State football officially introduced Derek Mason as the newly appointed head coach of the Blue Raiders.

After parting ways with longtime coach Rick Stockstill at the end of the regular season, the Raiders were searching for a successor, marking the first time they were looking for a new coach in nearly two decades.

Rick Stockstill had held the coaching position since 2006, leading the Blue Raiders to 10 bowl games during his tenure.

In a morning announcement on Wednesday, the university revealed that Derek Mason, the former coach of Vanderbilt from 2014 to 2020, would be taking the helm as the head coach.

Mason accrued a 27-55 record, with a 10-46 record in the SEC during his time at Vanderbilt, guiding the team to two bowl games in 2016 and 2018, both of which were losses.

The school announced Wednesday morning that former Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason would take over as head coach.

Following his tenure at Vanderbilt, Mason served as the defensive coordinator at Auburn in 2021 and Oklahoma State in 2022.

In the 2023 season, he took on the role of a color analyst on the SEC Network.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Mason stated, “We want to win championships here, make no doubt about it. I’m ready to hit the ground running. I’m ready to roll.”
